Strategies to get the best rental home experience:

Cost saving strategies:

  • Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • To get the best value, try shifting your group's vacation week to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and October offer warmer temperatures, , and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during June, July, and August.
  • Owners sometimes offer rate reductions for veterans. Check with your host or property manager to see if special discounts are available for your group before you book.
  • Property managers typically offer their guests an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local Havelock visitors guide magazine upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, travel guides have money saving offers on local accommodations, restaurants and tours.

Use filters to narrow your rental search:

  • Select a group lead, select your dates, and select a budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Sands Villa 410, Oceanfront Condo, located in Atlantic Beach, NC! has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is normally available on booking websites. If they are not listed, email or call the property owner before reserving the vacation home. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches. You will need to determine what configuration is best for your vacation.
  • If your group is bringing pets, search for a property that allows animals. Ask for specifics on breed, size, and type restrictions. Usually, property managers charge pet deposits and fees.
  • Visiting for a specific attraction? Try a map search to locate nearby rentals.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. .

During your stay:

  • Put the owner's information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, stereo or coffee maker. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents many problems.
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking the property when you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • Note any damages to the property at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be beneficial if a dispute is filed.
  • Be a good neighbor. Often times, surrounding homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, take a walk through the property to reconfirm you've collected all personal items. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did your family have a terrific time? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for guests to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or host was fantastic, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was out of order and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
