How to book the best vacation rental experience:
Get the most from your budget:
- The sooner your group can reserve a home, the easier your search will be. The best rental properties are booked early. Reserving your rental property six to twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and book your rental.
- Summertime is high season in Emerald Isle. Book your vacation in the Spring or Fall to get the benefit of gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager whether your family qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
- Management companies and individual rental owners often offer their guests an option to add vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally will cost 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for more information.
- Find a copy of your local visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitor guides contain discounts for nearby tours and attractions.
Narrow your Search:
- To start, have your family decide on a vacation week and a maximum budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration you need. Bogue's Retreat, Oceanview House in Emerald Isle, NC! has 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always accessible on booking websites. If not, email the property owner before reserving the home. Note that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds in living rooms. You will need to work out what configuration is optimal for your group.
- Some properties allow pets, and some do not. Acceptable types of dog or cat, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask the owner about your furry family members before booking.
- Visiting for a specific event or attraction? If so, use a map search to find nearby rentals.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. .
More considerations:
- Get the owner's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental property. We recommend storing the manager's information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Hosts are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
- Ensure you protect the owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are out, just like you would at home.
- To make sure damages are not linked to your visit, note any problem areas during arrival. Contact the host right away to relay any issues. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be useful.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Frequently, surrounding homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Double-check every room of the rental property to confirm that you've packed everything on check-out day. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the rental a final time and look for any damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager is not available, remember to take photos and video of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a fantastic vacation? Many rental home management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide reviews. If your property and/or property management company was great, they would love to hear about it. If anything was amiss and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
