Tips to get the best vacation rental experience:
Finding the best rental home value:
- The sooner you can book, the easier your search will be. The most desirable vacation rentals are reserved very early. Booking your vacation rental 6-12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental.
- Booking your Havelock vacation home in the Spring or Fall is our favorite way to save money on your vacation home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of suitable properties. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer.
- Property management companies sometimes offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Check with your property manager to see if special discounts are available for your group.
- Property managers typically offer their guests an option to purchase trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for specifics.
- Find a copy of your local Havelock area magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, travel guide magazines contain discounts for nearby shops and restaurants.
Use filters to narrow your search:
- Begin by choosing vacation dates and a budget.
- Note the number beds and the bed configuration your group needs. Amenities GALORE! Private pool, hot tub, elevator and more has 6 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms.
- Precise information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always available online. If not, reach out to the property manager before you book the home. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches.
- If your family is bringing pets, you'll need to book a pet-friendly property. Get details on breed, weight, and type requirements. Be aware that some property owners charge pet deposits and fees.
- Visiting for a specific event? If so, use a map search to browse nearby rentals.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
Have a great stay:
- Put the owner's information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, television set or kitchen appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent many problems.
- Ensure you protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking the property while you are out, just like you would back home.
- Upon arrival, make note of any issues with the property and immediately contact the host. Record all coorespondence.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant vacationers disrupting your peaceful home life. Employ the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and places you would have not otherwise known!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to spend a rainy day, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, walk through the rental to reconfirm you've collected all of your things. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the rental one final time and scan for any damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever possible. If the property manager is not available, remember to take photos and video of the rental to record its condition.
- Did your group have a great stay? Most rental home management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or property manager was great, they would love to hear about it. If anything was wrong and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
