Tips and Tricks for getting the best vacation rental experience:

When to book a Havelock rental & When to go:

  • In the Havelock area, The sooner you can reserve a vacation rental, the better your selection will be. The most desirable vacation homes are reserved early. Reserving your vacation home 6-12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental.
  • June, July, and August are high season in the Havelock area. To get the best rental within your budget, we suggest booking in the Spring or Fall. You'll enjoy lower rates, greater selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of giant crowds at the beach and popular Havelock attractions.
  • Owners sometimes offer rate reductions for veterans. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if discounts are available for your family.
  • Booking websites typically offer renters an option to add vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for additional information.
  • Find a copy of your local Havelock area magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitor guides have discounts for local shops and restaurants.

Finding the perfect vacation rental in the Havelock area:

  • Choose a designated group leader, choose your trip dates, and select a maximum budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. Maggie's Place, Oceanside House, in Emerald Isle NC! has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is normally available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, email or call the host before you reserve the property. Remember that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You'll need to work out what configuration is optimal for your trip.
  • Some properties allow pets, but some do not. Acceptable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask the property manager about allowable breeds and types before booking.
  • Looking for special amenities? Most rental websites include search filters for amenities. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. .

More considerations:

  • Take a copy of the host's contact number and entry/exit procedures for your rental property. Put the host's information in your smartphone.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, intercom or washer/dryer. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief call prevents many problems.
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental when you are out, just like you would back home.
  • Record any issues with the rental upon arrival, and immediately contact the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are very helpful if there is a dispute.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable visitors disrupting your quiet neighborhood. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and places you would have not otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can often help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the rental to confirm you've collected everything. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the property a final time and look for any damage. We advise walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the property manager is not available, ensure that you take pictures of the rental to record its condition.
  • Remember to leave a review! Hosts rely on excellent feedback to compel more reservations. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other vacationing families will appreciate that you share your review find their best vacation rental. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to solve it.
