Heather is a long-term Beaufort resident, visual artist and boat captain in addition to being our property manager, and she's available to ensure your stay in Beaufort is fantastic. She also runs licensed boat cruises and tours of the barrier islands, including Shackleford Banks, the Rachel Carson Reserve, and Cape Lookout.

Historical Note
The original building (now the enormous front room with original wood burning stove) was constructed in Morehead City in 1910. Subsequently, it was moved to its present location in Beaufort where two additions were added: the present day eat-in kitchen and the middle structure with dinning room, baths and two bedrooms. Architecturally, you will notice the style differences between the family room and kitchen with their vaulted ceilings and the newer middle structure.

Our top Vacation rental home tips and tricks:

Sticking to a rental budget:

  • June, July, and August are high season in the Havelock area. Book your Havelock rental home in Fall or Spring to get the benefit of beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities.
  • Reserve your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Some hosts and property managers offer discounts for veterans. Ask your property manager if special offers are available for your family.
  • Property management companies typically offer customers an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly costs between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for specifics.
  • Look for your local visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitor guide magazines have coupons for nearby shops and restaurants.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • First, have your family decide on the best dates and a max budget.
  • Decide how many beds and the configuration your group needs. Scuttlebutt Nautical Cottage in Historic Beaufort, One Block from Waterfront has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is generally available online. If you don't see them listed, call the host before booking the property. Note that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds in living rooms.
  • Are you visiting for a single event? If so, use a map search to locate nearby rentals.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
  • Are you bringing the family pet? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Pet fees or might be applied to your invoice.

Tips for your stay:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Add a note with the instructions to your smartphone, and take a printed copy.
  • To ensure that no damages are linked to your family's visit, make note of any problem areas during arrival. text the property manager immediately to record any damages. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having the recorded issues and contact attempts will be very helpful.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, stereo or thermostat. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent quite a few issues.
  • Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often, adjacent homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking policies is the right thing to do.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can typically help. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Lock your vacation home while you are out and about. Keep your property safe!
  • Double-check every room of the rental property to make sure that you've packed all of your family's items on check-out day. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did you have a terrific stay? Most rental managers make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or property manager was wonderful, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was defective and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
