Strategies to get the optimal vacation home experience:
Getting the best rental value:
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of NC. Book your rental property in the Spring or Fall to get the benefit of beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Havelock vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
- Reserve your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during holiday gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host whether your group qualifies for a special rate.
- Property management companies often offer renters an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally will cost you between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed days as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for specifics.
- Look for your local Havelock visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitors guides have deals for nearby tours and attractions.
Planning, selecting, and booking yourrental home:
- Begin by choosing trip dates and a spending budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Sunny Daze, Oceanside Duplex in Atlantic Beach, NC! has 3 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Havelock rentals search.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always available on booking websites. Otherwise, call the property management company before booking your rental. Note that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms. You'll need to work out which bed configuration is optimal for your family.
- Visiting for a specific event or attraction? Use a map search to browse nearby properties.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to ask about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
- If your family is bringing pets, you'll need to book a pet-friendly vacation rental. Make sure to ask for details on breed, weight, and type requirements. Usually, hosts require additional pet deposits and fees.
During your stay:
- Take a copy of the owner's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental home. Store the manager's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
- To ensure that damages are not linked to your stay, make a record of any problem areas during arrival. Call the rental manager immediately to record any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of issues and contact attempts will be valuable.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, television set or kitchen appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents lots of problems.
- Be a good neighbor. Often, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
- Ensure you protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home when you are away, just like you would back home.
- Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, walk through the rental property to reconfirm you've collected all personal items. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Inspect the property a final time and scan for damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can. If the manager isn't available, take photos of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- After your trip, leave feedback! Property owners rely on excellent feedback to stimulate future reservations. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationing families will will be grateful for your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to solve it.
